~ Lyrics ~
Standing on this mountain top
Looking just how far we’ve come
Knowing that for every step
You were with us

Kneeling on this battleground
Seeing just how much You’ve done
Knowing every victory
Was Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
Yes, our hearts can say

Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Standing on this mountain top
Looking just how far we’ve come
Knowing that for every step
You were with us

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
Never once did we ever walk alone
Carried by Your constant grace
Held within Your perfect peace
Never once, no, we never walk alone

We know, You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Indeed, it would be a miserable world if all the activities of life were solo missions and you make it or break it by the sweat on your back alone. What if the only thing you can count on is yourself and the only person who can make anything happen is you? If I had to figure that life was only me against the world, I feel like I would just curl up and cry in my bed every day. Life is hard and full of challenges and it rarely (if ever) goes the way you would like it to. I believe anyone who does not fully agree with this reality has never really tried to do anything in life because I have never met anyone who disagreed. Praise God that life is not a solo mission!

When my own weaknesses show me how inadequate I am and that I cannot “do life” on my own, I am always drawn back to the reality that I am never on my own. God is with me wherever I may be and his strength is shown forth in my weakness. Every success, every victory, every accomplishment, and every step no matter how small was done with God. Not one step of life did I every walk alone.

I love this song because it describes the absolute perpetuity of God’s presence in our lives. No matter what we are going through, we face it with God at our side. We have never been left to deal with our problems alone. God’s endless love and faithfulness has given me consolation and encouragement that exceeds anything that could be found in myself or in the world. I have acknowledged that reality my whole life, but believing it is not something that happens in my head, it is something that happens in my heart. Too often we become complacent with God’s presence. Unfortunately, that is when people replace God with themselves. Even people who profess to believe God for years often find themselves with a false sense of security and a shallow faith because what they have known in their head never had an effect upon their heart. They failed to step down from their throne and give their true King his rightful place in their heart.

God, your grace covers all my weaknesses and imperfections, and despite my disobedience and failure to do everything that pleases you, you are still here with me. Lord, help me always acknowledge you and have my pride and self-reliance broken by your wondrous majesty, for you reign as King in my heart.

Whether we realize it or not, God knows us better than we know ourselves and he is closer than we could ever imagine. There is nowhere we can go where his Spirit does not go. There is nothing we go through that God does not already see the end: “If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you” (Ps 139:11-12). Actually, Psalm 139 is a most wonderful Psalm that speaks about the continual presence of God in our lives. Never once has he ever not been with us.

Psalm 139:1-16 ESV
1O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.
3You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.
4Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
5You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
5Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.
6Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?
7If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
8If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
9even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.
10If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,”
11even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
12For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
13I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
14My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
15Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
